Irene at a glance
Background and Historical Information of the Area
The area of Irene is deeply rooted in its rich history. Daniel Elardus Erasmus, settled on the farm Doornkloof in the 1830's. When Erasmus passed away, his 3 sons inherited the farm.
In 1889, Alois Hugo Nellmapius bought a portion of the farm Doornkloof and renamed the central part of the farm "Irene", after his 2-year-old daughter at the time, "Irene Violet Nellmapius". Irene passed away at the age of 73 in 1961.
The word Irene means PEACE in Greek and pronounced in three syllables I're'ne. Peace is certainly what you experience when you wander the beautiful streets of Irene with its massive trees, established gardens, and abundant birdlife.
The main road in Irene is still called 'Nellmapius road', named after Alois Hugo Nellmapius.
In 1896, Nellmapius sold the farm to Johannes Albertus Van der Byl, who successfully converted it into the Irene Dairy Farm. He also proclaimed this town in 1902.
Irene is renowned for its country feeling, housing the Irene Dairy Farm, old war memorials, buildings with significant historical background, its own 18-hole golf course established in 1910 as well as established homes. It is fully developed and comprises approximately 1000 properties of which a handful are sectional title.
